Magic In The Moonlight Shines At Avon In Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Currently playing at Stamford’s Avon Theater is Woody Allen’s Magic In The Moonlight, a wonderful period piece that is set in the 1920s on the opulent French Riviera.

This light, romantic comedy is about a master magician, and mystic debunker, Stanley Crawford (Colin Firth) . He appears on stage as Chinese conjurer Wei Ling Soo, a celebrated magician who is tapped by his oldest friend and fellow magician, Howard Burkan (Simon McBurney), to help try and expose a psychic medium Sophie Baker (Emma Stone) as a fake.

Onstage, Soo is a marvel, packing theaters and wowing audiences with his amazing feats of brilliance. Offstage, Stanley is a grouchy, arrogant Brit with an inflated opinion of himself, an aversion to phony spiritualists’ claims of real magic, and a complete disdain of spirituality entirely.

As with most of his recent films, what occurs onscreen are a series of lighthearted, magical moments that are wrapped up in the melodic music of the era creating a truly magical atmosphere even as the lighthearted tale is woven across the cinematic backdrop of the Riviera.

The story itself is full of great dialogue, insightful observations, and wonky twists and turns that make it a veritable delight to unfold onscreen. It is well worth taking in for those of us long-time Allen fans.

The Avon Theater is located at 272 Bedford St. in Stamford.

Magic In The Moonlight is rated “PG-13” and runs 1 hour and 29 minutes, it stars Emma Stone, Colin Firth, Marcia Gay Harden, Antonia Clarke, Natasha Andrews, and is written and directed by Woody Allen.
