Launched in 1970 as a way to motivate people to take action, Earth Day is a movement that gave voice to an emerging consciousness.

People take part by planting trees, holding neighborhood cleanups and pushing local and national leaders for legislative change.

Earth Day 2016 will be remembered for the scheduled signing of the Paris climate agreement.

President Barak Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping are anticipated to sign the document April 22, according to a White House statement.
