Greenwich's Witherell Nursing Facility Offers Tips To Residents' Families

GREENWICH, Conn. – The Nathaniel Witherell nursing facility in Greenwich wants the family members of its residents to connect with the medical staff and their loved ones.

To establish this bond, The Witherell is offering three tips.

First, The Witherell invites family members to attend Care Plan meetings, which take place within two weeks after residents move into the facility and every quarter thereafter.

During these meetings, guests are asked to provide feedback about the type of care their loved ones should receive.

“Every bit of information about the residents’ habits and preferences helps us to make the experience a positive and fruitful one,” said Lynn Bausch, director of nursing at the Witherell. “We don’t want to whisk residents off to bed immediately after dinner if they like to watch late-night television, for example. We also like to know about their interests in music, gardening, art, and other kinds of activities. Anything that will help us make their quality of life the best that it can be.”

Bausch notes that these meetings also cover care treatments and updates about the residents.

Second, the Witherell encourages family members to regularly meet with staff.

Finally, the Witherell recommends membership in the Witherell Family Council led by Gloria Guise, whose mother was a resident at the Witherell.

“I will let the chef know when an item isn’t popular, or stop by someone’s room to wheel them out to dinner,” said Guise. “I’ll notify a staff member when a resident needs to use the restroom and I’ll hug a family member who may be sad over a parent’s deteriorating condition.”

Membership on the Family Council is open to any family member of a resident at the Witherell.
