Greenwich Celebrates Small Business Saturday With Deals, Discounts

GREENWICH, Conn. -- There's something to be said for small boutiques where you can find things not carried in big box stores. So explained Justine Matteis, manager of the Bruce Museum gift shop in Greenwich who believes shopping for the holidays shouldn't be just about heading to the mall or going online.

"Small shops like ours carry a lot of unique things that you really can't find anywhere else," she said. "Plus it’s fun to come in and just look around – and maybe see your neighbors.”

Small Business Saturday, the initiative started by American Express four years ago, is all about community. "If you don't shop at our brick-and-mortar stores and shop locally, one day we won't be here," said Corey Fontana, owner of family-owned Fontana Couture.

His store is among many in the Greenwich area offering discounts as a way to boost sales and reiterate the "Shop Local" theme. Fontana is offering 25 percent discounts across all merchandise.

That same price savings is being offered at WishList, where the store has been a participant since the beginning of the American Express promotion.

And at Threads & Treads, co-owner Matthew Yardis said all sneakers are $20 off throughout the entire Black Friday weekend.

Courage b. is also offering weekend savings -- 30 percent off the entire store, according to store manager Giulia Natale, for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Greater Greenwich Chamber of Commerce is doing its part and has given local business owners "Shop Small" totes to hand out to customers. It is also offering a free map of participating stores, some of which include OGGI 5, Splurge, MakerBot and Skin Medica.

Said Marcia O’Kane, executive director of Greenwich Chamber of Commerce: "Our chamber encourages all shoppers to support the local economy by buying from small stores."
