Mark Mellinger , a clinical psychologist, and Barbara Iwler , a licensed social worker, hadn't realized quite how much they had accumulated until it was time to move. "After 19 years in the same house I was amazed at how much stuff we had collected," says Mark. He found himself tossing out things that had sentimental value , as well as tons of junk.
The couple made the decision to downsize because their home in Dobbs Ferry was taking up too much of their time . When an offer on a traditional home in Hastings fell through, they went to inspect the new Riverview Club , in Greystone, near Hastings-on-Hudson. Residences range from $180,000 to the mid $500,000s and buyers have a large menu of options for customizing their apartments.
Moving from a house to an apartment wasn't easy. "Most of the furniture had to go as it didn't physically fit," Mark says. "In our previous house, if we didn't know what to do with something we used to stick it in a spare room." That's no longer an option. But the purging has had one positive effect. Mark and Barbara have decorated their new home in a fashionable '50s mid-century style.
Mark particularly likes the commute to his office on Manhattan's Upper West Side. The Metro North station is only a five-minute walk, but he prefers the 25-minute drive. "I time it so I get there when all the spots are available," he says.
Barbara and Mark are enjoying apartment living far more than they'd expected. They meet new friends during every trip on the elevator. "It's so different from suburban life where the only people you see are those on either side of you," says Barbara.
