FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Connecticut ranked 31st out of the 50 states in Gallup's recent annual well-being poll. The ranking is a steep drop from 2012, when the Nutmeg State ranked 16th.

More than 178,000 interviews nationwide were conducted to examine Americans’ perceptions on topics such as physical and emotional health, healthy behaviors, work environment, social and community factors, financial security, and access to necessities such as food, shelter and healthcare.

Connecticut's well-being index was a 65.9, well behind the No. 1 overall state, North Dakota, who clocked in with an index of 70.4, according to the poll.

South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota and Montana rounded out the top five while Ohio, Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky and West Virginia were ranked as the bottom five states, respectively.

Two of Connecticut's neighbors fared better in the survey. Massachusetts was ranked 13th and New Jersey ranked 23rd.

New York and Rhode Island, on the other hand, fared slightly worse, with New York coming in at No. 35 and Rhode Island at no. 39.
