Lulu Powers Dishes On Throwing a Better Party

Former Weston resident Lulu Powers knows food and entertaining. Growing up as one of six children in Fairfield County, her home was the hub for great family meals. Now an established caterer based in Los Angeles, Lulu’s clients have included Will Smith and  his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, Arianna Huffington, Madonna and Bill Clinton.

Drawing on her practical experience, Lulu branched out to write a cookbook, "Food to Flowers: Simple, Stylish Food for Easy Entertaining." It’s a guide for entertainers of all skill levels on throwing affordable, easy enjoyable parties. She has a knack for making people feel at home, while giving them an experience to last a lifetime.

I recently had the opportunity to catch up with Lulu, and get the skinny on her why she loves food, and what she does. She even reveals her secret weapon in the kitchen.

SEBASTIEN LAFOREST: What makes you get up every morning to continue what you do?

LULU POWERS: I like being creative. My job feeds me that.

SL: If there was only one recipe of yours you could share with people, which one would it be and why?

LP: My mother Patty P’s chocolate cake. It’s outrageous! Also, my grilled cheese. Anybody can make those. All you need is a pan and a spatula.

SL: If you had to pick your favorite television chef who would it be and why?

LP: I love Mark Bittman. I think he is a genius

SL: What is your secret weapon in the kitchen?

LP: My creativity. I can throw a dish together with whatever I have -- a little bit of this, a little bit of that…

SL: What tips can you share for throwing the best soiree?

LP: Be prepared. Check out my entertaining cheat sheet.

SL: What is the best perk to being not only a caterer, but also a cookbook author?

LP: I finally wrote down my favorite recipes. I keep my book in the kitchen and can now look up a recipe. Wahoo!

SL: Is there anything else that you would like to share?

LP: My favorite motto: “Fear is like fire, you can either cook with it or let it burn you.” I want to take the fear out of cooking and entertaining. Read my book and you to will be able to throw a party.
