Singer and songwriter Suzanne Sheridan along with other local musicians will be performing a song list that includes a number of Civil Rights and Vietnam War protest songs.
The concert is set for 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 13, at the Westport Historical Society, 25 Avery Place, across from Westport Town Hall.
The event has been planned to commemorate Seeger, who died Jan. 28 at the age of 94. Songs he was best known for include 1960s hits “If I Had a Hammer,” “Turn, Turn, Turn,” and “Where Have All the Flowers Gone.”
Bruce Taylor, a Weston native and friend of Seeger, will open the event. Taylor, a retired teacher, makes stringed instruments, including the 12-string guitar and long-neck five-string banjo that Seeger used. Taylor also wrote and performed songs with Seeger.
Sheridan plans to perform Seeger’s “If I Had a Hammer,” and songs of other famous artists such as Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. She is a former jingle writer, and composed music used on "The Electric Company" and other PBS shows.
Bob Cooper, a keyboardist and Westport resident, will also play. Cooper’s musical past includes playing the piano from 1978 to 1981 with the John Mooney Blues Band and playing the keyboard from 2000 to 2009 in Harvey Robbins’ Doo-Wop Hall of Fame concerts.
Rounding out the evening will be Cole Smith, a Wilton High School senior and a classical and jazz violinist. He has played with both the New Haven Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Norwalk Youth Symphony Orchestra. He volunteers his musical talents to raise money for charitable donations.
Admission to the Coffeehouse is $10 per person.
