"We are pleased to provide an opportunity to discuss the risk factors, screening and treatment options for lung cancer in recognition of National Lung Cancer Awareness Month," said Dr. Michael Ebright, director of thoracic surgery at the hospital. "Studies show the enormous value that earlier screening makes after thoughtful discussion between a physician and an at-risk patient."
The event, "Shine a Light on Lung Cancer," begins at 6 p.m. at the Tully Health Center, 32 Strawberry Hill Court.
Some elements of the event include a panel discussion of medical professionals, several testimonials from lung cancer patients and light refreshments.
According to a statement from the event organizers, Stamford Hospital maintains a "comprehensive" lung cancer screening program that encourages yearly lung screening with low-dose CT for individuals ages 55-77, who are current or former smokers having quit within the past 15 years and have smoked at least a pack of cigarettes a day for 30+ years.
A cornerstone of the program is the Commit to Quit smoking cessation program, which includes multiple, one-on-one customized sessions with a trained tobacco specialist.
