FAIRFIELD, Conn. Fairfields Board of Selectmen covered a lot of ground in their biweekly meeting Wednesday night. Aside from school renovation projects and town labor disputes, here are a few other decisions made by First Selectman Michael Tetreau and the towns executives:
? The selectmen finally gave their approval to the Department of Public Works plan to update the decorative streetlamps along the Post Road. Assistant Director Ed Boman first pitched the idea in January to install lower-energy LED lamps through a United Illuminating program.
But part of his plan to save money was to turn off the lights at midnight each day. The selectmen asked him to look into leaving the lights on until the late-night bars and restaurants close. Boman and UI agreed, and now the lights will stay on until 2 a.m.
Even with the extra time, the new lights will use about one-sixth the energy of the current filament bulbs. That means not only less energy use for the town, but lower cost to the town on electricity bills once the lamps are paid off.
The lights will be installed along the Post Road between Mill Plain Road and Grasmere Avenue this spring.
? The selectmen agreed to renew the towns lease with the Pilot House for another three years. The program for kids with developmental disabilities rents a portion of the former Grasmere School from Fairfield. Under the deal approved Wednesday, the group will remain at the school until at least 2015 for its old rent $1 per year.
