Wrap it Up

SOUTHPORT, Conn. Sometimes getting a bum rap is a very good thing. Especially when it involves mod patterns that hug your curves and hide your flaws. It’s a BumWrap is the brainchild of Amey Simonds and her sister, Liz Flavin. A BumWrap is like a form-fitting, ultra miniskirt you wear over your leggings to avoiding bearing too much bum.

“It was Amey’s idea,” Liz explains of the company based in Southport, Conn.. “She went to a dance class where the instructor had this material kind of wrapped around her hips. She went home after class and cut off the top of a camisole and slid it over her leggings. Then she called me and said, ‘I have this idea. Are you in?’”

Liz was totally in. “I had actually just been to the gym myself and gotten a glimpse of my rear view in too tight black pants and I just thought, ‘I’m so done with this look.’”

And so, the BumWrap was born.

“I mean, I don’t know how many times I’ve tied a shirt or a jacket around my waist to cover up,” says Liz. “Or the long t-shirt look. That’s why women wear the baggy, long t-shirt -- to cover up. With a BumWrap, you can wear a more fitted top. In fact, after a friend started wearing hers, she had people telling her she looked so fit. And she hadn’t changed a thing.

So the two sisters set to work creating their product.

“We did a lot of research and started making some samples,” Liz, who has a background in high-fashion marketing, told me. “And we would wear the samples out and women would just come up to us and say, ‘Where can I get that?’ So we got a manufacturer, and someone to help us with design. I mean, who would think a little thing like a BumWrap would need so much design work. But we really put a lot into making it look good and fit right. And now, we can hardly keep them in stock.”

And that, as they say in show business, is a wrap.
