Racing Duckies Ready to Go

Ever seen 3,000 little rubber ducks face off in a river race? Or, for that matter, 3,000 little rubber ducks? If you live in Westport, maybe you have. Get ready to see this spectacle on Saturday, June 12, because it's duck derby time of year again, when the Westport Sunrise Rotary launches 3000 rubber ducks into the Saugatuck River, to raise money for charity. Here's how it works: buy a $20 raffle ticket. Your ticket's number is sported by your own personal rubber duck. If your duck is among the first ten finishers, you win a Visa gift card; a $5,000 one for first duck finisher, $1,000 for second and $500 cards for the others.

There are actually two races. The first, at 3:15 p.m., is the corporate duck race. At 3:45 p.m., the civilian ducks race. Admission is free and starting at 1 p.m. there are children's arts and crafts, music and food and drink. The event takes place in Parker Harding Plaza. Tickets are on sale at Fairfield County Bank branches and Christie's Country Store. Last year's race netted $20,000 which was donated to charity. More this year? Depends on raffle ticket sales. The ducks do their part, how 'bout you? For more information, visit TheGreatDuckRace.org.
