GREENWICH, Conn. -- In celebration of Older Americans Month, Dr. John Rowe, a professor of health and aging, will be the featured speaker for a Signature Lecture Series at the Greenwich Library focusing on “The Challenges and Opportunities of an Aging Society."

The talk will be in Greenwich Library’s Cole Auditorium on Thursday, May 19 at 7 p.m. The lecture is free, however seating is limited and registration is recommended. Following the lecture there will be a Q & A with Rowe.

Rowe is the Julius B. Richmond Professor of Health Policy and Aging at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, and former Chairman and CEO of Aetna, Inc. Previously, Rowe served as President and CEO of Mount Sinai NYU Health and was professor of Medicine and founding Director of the Division on Aging at the Harvard Medical School.

Currently, Rowe leads the MacArthur Foundation’s Network on An Aging Society.

Rowe will address how dramatic increases in life expectancy and aging raise the question of how best to re-engineer America’s core societal institutions, such as education, work, retirement, leisure and health care to assure that society can support the future elderly population.

“We are honored to have a speaker of Dr. Rowe’s caliber address our community regarding these issues,” said Lori Contadino, Director, Greenwich Commission on Aging. “Dr. Rowe’s insights will not only educate our community, but will also help the Commission on Aging lay the groundwork for its vision – to build an educated and cohesive community that understands, accepts and supports the successful aging of its residents and embraces the inter-generational opportunities that come with increased longevity.”

Light refreshments will be provided at the event.

The Greenwich Commission on Aging, Sterling Care, the Greenwich Library and Friends of Nathaniel Witherell are co-sponsoring the series.

The Greenwich Commission on Aging is the Town agency responsible for the needs of Greenwich’s older residents. For more information on the Greenwich Commission on Aging, click here.
