The event is inspired by the 100th anniversary of the death of Alexander Scriabin. Ohlsson will perform a selection of works by this composer who bridged the romantic and modern eras, as well as works by Scriabin’s Russian counterparts, Prokofiev and Rachmaninoff.
Three piano students from the HARTT School have also been chosen to participate in a master class with Ohlsson the day prior to his recital. The students will each choose a piece of music to perform and each will receive a 40-minute coaching session.
“This is a rare opportunity for music students to be coached by a pianist of this caliber and an experience they will always remember,” said Barbara Soroca, chief executive and president of the Stamford Symphony. “Garrick Ohlsson is the most versatile of America’s important pianists.”
There will be a post-concert dessert in the upper lobby of the Palace Theatre. The dessert is $20 and for subscribers only.
Ohlsson began his piano studies at age 8 at the Music Conservatory of Westchester in White Plains. At age 13, he entered the Juilliard School in New York City. In 1970, Ohlsson won the gold medal at the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw. He remains the single American to have done so.
Ohlsson was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize in 1994. In 2008, he received a Grammy award for best instrumental soloist recording. In 2014, he was the recipient of the Jean Gimbel Lane Prize in Piano performance from Northwestern University Bienen School of Music.
Ohlsson has recently performed recitals in Montreal, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle and New York City’s Carnegie Hall. His recent orchestral appearances include the Boston Symphony as well as the orchestras of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta, Cleveland and the London Philharmonic. Ohlsson is also an avid chamber musician and has collaborated with the Cleveland, Emerson Tákacs and Tokyo String quartets.
