Sumo Smackdown Rewards Reading at Norwalk School

Brookside Elementary School students screamed with delight as their principal and assistant principal entered the gymnasium as giant sumo wrestlers Friday afternoon. The Norwalk students' excitement grew as the two circled each other on mats, ready to give the other a body slam.

The Brookside Sumo Wrestling Championship was the hard-earned reward for the students, who had read more than 19,000 books from January to April. Principal David Hay had challenged the students to read 16,000 books, and they surpassed his expectations.

In the end, Assistant Principal Jennifer Masone bested Hay. Hay took Masone in the first round, but then Mason won the next two rounds to win the match. "The kids and teachers went crazy," said Tim Downey, Brookside's gym teacher who photographed the event.
