Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said on Thursday, March 12, that the number has risen from the 28 cases that were reported on Wednesday.

Of the 40 cases, 31 are in the Town of Hempstead, six are in the Town of North Hempstead and three are in Oyster Bay. One of the positive cases is an elderly resident of the Bristol Assisted Living home in North Hills who has been quarantined and hospitalized.

"Nassau County now has 40 confirmed cases, up from 28 yesterday. Our numbers are steadily increasing as we expected with increased testing," Curran said. "Based on the facts on the ground, we're working directly with vulnerable communities to lower risks of community spread.

"We're calling special attention to Seniors, those with serious chronic medical conditions, heart or lung disease, diabetes, or immune-compromised systems due to such treatments as chemotherapy. These residents especially should avoid large gatherings or densely populated venues."

The coronavirus outbreak has led to the closure of multiple Long Island schools, which will shutter their doors for at least two weeks to allow for extra cleaning and sanitizing of buildings.

There have also been seven confirmed cases in Suffolk County, and more than 200 statewide. Both Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo are expected to provide updates later on Thursday with new numbers as the number of positive cases continues to rise.

Globally, as of Thursday, March 12, there have been 129,589 confirmed coronavirus cases that resulted in 4,749 deaths. In the United States, there have been 1,364 confirmed cases that resulted in 38 deaths.
