FISHKILL, N.Y. – The emergency operations office primarily responsible for the safety at the Indian Point nuclear power plant will be completely moved to Fishkill by 2018, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal.

While the site currently operates one emergency response team at the Buchanan-based power plant and another about 20 miles away in White Plains, both offices will be consolidated into the Fishkill office, which is to be located at a Merritt Boulevard office complex – less than 10 miles from the site, according to the Journal.

On Monday, New York state officials along with representatives of Entergy Corp., the New Orleans-based company that owns the nuclear power plant, announced that Indian Point’s two active units will close by April of 2021.

Officials with Entergy said the decision was made, in part, because operating Indian Point is no longer financially feasible.

As part of the agreement between Entergy and state, New York officials have agreed to drop all legal challenges against the plant.

Additionally, one Entergy official said the company has spent $200 on license renewal for the site over the past 10 years, yet still does not have a renewed license.

Another financial aspect involves the plant’s profitability, according to company officials, who said that an abundance of natural gas in the region has caused a 45 percent decline in the price of power.

Entergy officials said they will work with the site’s employees to ensure as many as possible have found employment by the time the site officially closes.

Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino appeared taken aback as news of the power plant’s closure came about.

Claiming that his office had not been informed of the deal by the state, Entergy or the local municipalities most closely affected by the closure, Astorino said the impact could be disastrous for electricity rates in his county and New York City.
