Lewisboro Councilman Peter DeLucia is always looking for ways to save taxpayers' money, even when visiting the men's room while skiing at Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort. It was there that DeLucia first experienced a waterless urinal.
"Once I saw them in action and it was odor free there were a lot of benefits," DeLucia said. "It's an environmentally conscious and economically conscious thing to do. It was a no brainer."
The town finished installing three of the urinals at its town pool this week, just in time for the Memorial Day weekend. Two others are in town parks and one is in the Highway Department. Each urinal costs $380.
The real savings for Lewisboro will be with the reduction of water usage. DeLucia said the town is estimating saving 120,000 gallons of potable water annually.
Supervisor Charles Duffy said cutting down flushing toilets is also beneficial to wells and septic systems.
"Anything we can do to not add waste going into the aquifer is better for our drinking water," Duffy said.
