The incident took place around 316 a.m., Sunday, Dec. 8, at the Doctors Path Apartment complex in Riverhead, said the Riverhead Police department.

Police said that after receiving a report of a shooting at the complex officers responded and located several people around the area of suffering from various injuries.

A preliminary investigation at the scene found two armed subjects entered the apartment and multiple shots were fired from a long gun, however, none of the reported injuries appears to be related to the gunfire, police said.

A struggle between the suspects and the occupants of the apartment ensued and the injuries were sustained during the fire, Riverhead Police said.

The Riverhead Fire Department responded to the scene as well as Riverhead Ambulance, Flanders Ambulance, Westhampton Beach Ambulance, and Suffolk County Aviation Section.

All of the injured were transported to the hospital, with at least one being airlifted.

The extent of the injuries and the victims' current physical conditions were not available.

Police said the incident does not appear to be a random act, and the occupants were the likely targets.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Riverhead Police at 631-727-4500.
