The Strategic Planning Committee of the Board of Education is overseeing the project, and welcome input from all stakeholders, including students, parents, teachers, childcare providers, coaches, elected officials, businesses who hire teens, health professionals and public safety providers. They have created a web page to provide the community with information and resources on adolescent sleep research and the role that school start times can play.
An important aspect of changing school start times has to do with logistics, particularly in regard to transportation. Routes, pickup times, and the quantity of buses may need to be changed in order to accommodate a shift in school start times.
The committee will be reviewing research, transportation parameters costs, stakeholder feedback, and policy impact. The Board of Education intends on making a decision by the end of October 2017, and if approved the new start times would be implemented int he 2018-19 school year.
