Wilton Students Take To Track For Walk-a-thon

WILTON, Conn. – If Christopher Jones had his way, he’d spend the entire day Wednesday walking around the Wilton High School track.

“You get to play around and talk with your friends about cool stuff,” said Christopher, 8, a fourth-grader at Cider Mill School “You walk around and jump in in the air and do stuff you can’t do in school. That would be fun.”

He and his Cider Mill classmates will be out there Wednesday. Only for an hour, though. Christopher and his classmates will be taking part in the school’s third annual Walk-A-Thon. The event begins at 8 a.m.

The event is organized by the school and the Cider Mill Parent-Teacher Association. As part of the walk, students and their parents raise money to fund school activities, including field trips, fun nights, and a visit from a children’s author.

Christopher’s mother, Mary Jones, a member of the Cider Mill PTA, said it will be fun to see the students and teachers taking the walk around the track that surrounds Fujitani Field. About 93 percent of the student body submitted pledge forms. Mary Jones remembers how happy her son was when he came home with the pledge forms.

“It generates a lot of excitement and school spirit,” said Jones, who will watch her son walk for the second time. “It doesn’t matter that it’s at eight in the morning. The kids look forward to it and they’re excited to take part in it.”

Even if it’s a little chilly. Temperatures on Wednesday morning are expected to be in the mid-40s.
