Fairfield Kids Get to Pick Some New Sports

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – It’s  time for the children to choose what activities they want to do, and the Fairfield PTA Council gave them a chance to Sunday afternoon.

“It’s kind of cool that you get to choose what you want,” said 10-year-old Isabella Swidler as she was signing into the Energy In/Energy Out event being held at the Sportsplex off of Post Road. “You can do stuff you can’t at school.”

Her mother was just as excited. Amy Cohn-Swidler said the event was an opportunity for her daughter to do something she wouldn’t normally do. “She’s signed up for ice skating, fencing, tumbling and Art You Can Eat.” Though Isabella already ice skates, fencing and tumbling were something she said she wanted to try.

“Basically we were trying to get the kids motivated,” Susan Bellissiamo, Energy In/Energy Out coordinator said. “Last year it was only exercise and food sampling.” For children in elementary school, Bellissiamo said, this year the program was trying to get the older children involved in different activities.

She explained that some kids in Fairfield, once they reach middle school, stop engaging in sports because they become elite and competitive.

“It’s a good opportunity to see everything” that the Sportsplex has to offer, said Erik Erikson, whose 11-year-old daughter Emily was participating in the event. “My daughter isn’t very competitive. She does sports for the social aspects. So this whole thing is great.”

Susan Buck said she brought her daughter Megan, 11, to the event so that she could see if “maybe she would like other things.”

Fifth-grader Emily Sforza was so excited, her mother Chrissy said, that when they were selling Girl Scout cookies at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, she asked all her friends if they were going as well.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for them to experience sports that they wouldn’t normally experience,” like fencing, Sforza said. “She got to pick what she wanted to do and not what someone else wanted her to do.”
