Letter: Safeguard Investments by Voting For Bond

Ossining School District taxpayers have an opportunity to safeguard the investments we’ve made over the past decades by embracing the proposed bond on March 6.

This bond addresses infrastructure needs to properly care for aging buildings. We have failing boilers. Roofs and masonry are literally giving way. On the program side, our science classes have run out of space and our middle school science program has long been hampered by outdated lab space. The auditorium, which serves as both a performance venue and a fully utilized classroom, has unreliable technical systems, broken seats, and does not conform with electrical and safety codes. The bond addresses these conditions.

And this bond results in no net increase in taxes. The amount we’ll receive in NYS Building Aid ($22 million) exceeds the anticipated interest ($21 million) over the life of the bond. It’s akin to getting an interest-free loan. The district has designed the financing expressly to keep our debt obligations equal to current levels. As the existing bonds come off, this bond is phased in.

Ossining School District residents, get the facts. Ask questions; attend meetings, contact board members, administrators, your neighbors. The School District has a lot of great resources on their website, www.ossiningufsd.org and www.ossiningcfs.com focuses on all the good reasons to support this bond.

Please join me in voting YES on March 6.
