Former Chappaqua Realtor, Beach Honored Friday

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. - A memorial service will be held for former Chappaqua resident, Josephine Warren Beach on Friday. Beach died Oct. 11 at Kendal-on-Hudson in Sleepy Hollow at the age of 93.

Born and raised in Petersburg, Va., she graduated from Hollins College in Roanoke, Va. with a degree in math and science. Beach went on to serve as one of the early female officers in the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service during World War II.

While stationed in New York City, she married Edward C. Warren in 1945. Together, they settled in Chappaqua and raised three children. Following the death of her husband in 1962, Beach worked in real estate, participated in the Chappaqua Investment Club and studied interior decorating at the New York School of Interior Design.

Beach also served as a deaconess at the First Congregational Church in Chappaqua and the disaster chairwoman of the Chappaqua Red Cross.

In 1995, she married John Warren Beach and moved to Bedford Hills and then Scarborough, N.Y. Through her husband's love of animals, she became involved with the Westchester SPCA and the Mt. Kisco Boys and Girls Club. After her second husband's death, she retired to Kendal-on-Hudson, where she is remembered for her creative touch and love of fresh flowers.

Beach often traveled with her friend Martha Holden of Kendal-on-Hudson, frequently visiting her daughter in Hannover, Germany.

She is survived by her sons Edward (Betsy) Warren, Jr. and Paul (Nina) Warren, her daughter Batlett (Clemens) Warren-Kretschmar, seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at First Congregational Church in Chappaqua at 4 p.m. on Friday. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the Helen Haviland Flower Fund at the First Congregational Church, 210 Orchard Ridge Road, Chappaqua, NY 10514, Smile Train, P.O. Box 96246, Washington, DC 20090, or Planned Parenthood, Attn: Online Services Program, 434 West 33rd Street, New York, NY 10001.
