Police Say Man Lead Officer To Marijuana in His Bag

PELHAM MANOR, N.Y. – A man told police early Wednesday morning that the glass container he had in his backpack did not contain alcohol, police said. Instead, officers said it contained marijuana.

Police charged 43-year-old Gary Greene of 280 Riverdale Avenue in Yonkers with criminal possession of marijuana in the fifth degree. Greene had approximately 28 grams of marijuana in his bag, police said.

While on patrol, an officer saw Greene walking westbound on the north side of Boston Post Road near Edgewood Avenue. It appeared, the officer reported, that he was walking from either the New Rochelle area or the vicinity of a stolen car crash that occurred earlier in the evening, in which Mount Vernon police were looking for two African-American males who fled the area.

An officer reportedly stopped Greene and asked him if he knew anything about the stolen car. Greene denied any involvement in the theft, police reports said.

Police said they then asked him to produce identification, which he eventually did. But as he was looking for it, the officer said that Greene put his knapsack on the sidewalk and when it hit the ground, it made a sound that led police to conclude that a glass container was inside the bag.

According to police reports, the officer asked Greene what the container was, to which he replied, “Something I’m drinking.” The police report said that the officer asked if it was alcohol, but Greene said, “It’s not alcohol. You can check.”

Police said a clear, glass mason jar with a clear bag inside of it was found. A brownish green, leafy substance, believed to be marijuana, was in the bag, police said.

Police then arrested Greene, transported him to headquarters and processed him.
