Norwalk Center's Friends Provide Chills, Thrills

NORWALK, Conn. — Robbie and Samantha Smith and their New Canaan schoolmates and friends brought a "spooktacular Halloween celebration" to the Carver Center last week in Norwalk.

Specially baked and wrapped Halloween cookies, mountains of pizza and an orange cotton candy machine were a few of the flourishes that made Halloween 2011 a happy memory for hundreds of Carver kids and their families. The wonderland of amusement included carnival games of chance, a face painter, Shrek and Scooby Doo performers, and a three-story high Wild One inflatable Roller Coaster obstacle course that filled a third of the Carver gym. A DJ kept the kids and adults alike dancing throughout the evening.

Joining Robbie and Samantha in all the fun and creativity were fellow New Canaan Saxe Middle School students Patrick Blasco, Julianne Handy, Audrey Kirkpatrick and Abigail Neugeboren and New Canaan High School student Matthew Blasco.

"Halloween is a great time for kids to show their creativity because there are no rules — the holiday goes wherever your imagination takes you," said Janine Smith, a Carver board member, longtime volunteer and the evening's benefactor. "The Carver kids were simply brilliant this year with their costumes and, as always, their joy is priceless."

Carver's youth development program created a haunted house on Carver's second floor that made even the oldest kids scream and recoil their way through the maze of frightening images, spider webs and program staff and youth leaders dressed in inspired costumes lurching out of hidden corners.

"Halloween is one of my favorite holidays," said Samantha. "I asked my family and friends to join me in making this year's celebration one to remember for Carver where I love to help out whenever I can. Judging the costume contest is what I will remember most."
