North State Food Locales Restock After Hurricane

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – While business was bustling again at two North State Road complexes Wednesday after a three-day power outage, food service locales were struggling to restock refrigerated items.

Long refrigerated aisles at Mrs. Green's Natural Market were empty on Wednesday afternoon as employees worked to restock the section with dairy products and produce that had been delivered in the morning.

A manager at the supermarket said he expected the store to have a complete dairy and frozen section again by Friday.

Workers at Dunkin Donuts, Hunan Garden and Squire's restaurant also restocked refrigerators with fresh food after throwing away things that had gone bad during the power outage that ended Tuesday.

"Milk, eggs, sausage, bacon, anything that was frozen or refrigerated we threw out," said Paola Lima at Dunkin Donuts.

To restock, a manager brought over new frozen food from a Dunkin Donuts in Pleasantville, Lima said.

At Hunan Garden, workers ordered new food as soon as the power came back on Tuesday and they picked it up in New York City.

"We got a lot of calls yesterday from customers, but we had nothing to sell until today because we only want the customers to get fresh food," said Jamie Ng.

Kurt Knox, the owner of Squire's restaurant, went to Restaurant Depot Tuesday afternoon to buy food to restock his refrigerators.

"All of (the food) had to be thrown out, we lost thousands of dollars," Knox said. "We still have to make everything from scratch, we're still struggling."

According to Con Edison's website, there were 524 customers in Briarcliff Manor still without power Wednesday afternoon, out of 2,964 total customers in Briarcliff. The estimated time by which power would be restored was Thursday at 11:59 p.m.

In the Town of Ossining, there were 94 customers still without power out of 2,307 total customers, and in the Village of Ossining, there were 204 customers still without power out of 8,980 total customers.

As in Briarcliff, the estimated time by which power would be restored to those still without power in Ossining was Thursday at 11:59 p.m.
