Letter: Norwalk Senior Center Deserves a Break

NORWALK, Conn. — It was distressing to learn that the Norwalk Senior Center had recently suffered its third act of vandalism this year. Its lawn sign was stolen, and other signage was removed as well.

Acts such as these are inexcusable. Although they may seem like small, harmless pranks, the effects are far from minor. The damage is costly. Arranging for insurance coverage, finding professionals to do the work and paying deductibles take a great deal of valuable time and energy. And even when everything has been repaired, just knowing that an act of vandalism has occurred, and may happen again, can be unsettling.

As a member of the Senior Center's board, I know how hard Executive Director Paul Palermo and the entire staff work to bring the best programs and services to the senior community. And they do a wonderful job of running a much-loved organization with scarce resources. Now they will have to find the funds to pay for repairs no one expected to have to make.

I know that any donations to help cover the repair costs will be most welcome at the Senior Center. Most important, I hope that the people responsible for these gratuitous acts of vandalism will realize how much harm they are doing and will find it in their hearts to stop.
