BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. Local artwork should be displayed along Pleasantville Road on Thursday evening for the Briarcliff Manor Chamber of Commerce's Artists in the Village night.
The event is one of a series of First Thursday of the month street festivals to encourage residents to come out to shop and dine at local businesses.
"It's been going really well, bringing a lot of people out, and we've had great weather," said Jane Valentine, the manager of Wondrous Things lifestyle gift store at 1159 Pleasantville Rd.
For Artists in the Village night, which will take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Images Art Gallery will be featuring a painting demonstration by artist James Grabowski, and Wake Robin lifestyle gift store will feature the work of two local artists: Kate Sullivan, a photographer who takes close-up images of birds and wildlife, and Joe Mullins, a painter who specializes in fish skeleton oil paintings.
March Boutique, a women's clothing boutique, will host a make-up artist, Lauren Prigozen, who will demonstrate how to go from day to night with make up.
There will also be free food and drink samplings along Pleasantville Road: Holbrook Cottage will serve pulled pork sliders with a peach barbeque sauce, Manor Wines and Spirits will host complimentary wine tasting and Wondrous Things will offer complimentary snacks and beverages.
Artists whose works will be exhibited on the street include Jay Albrecht of Tarrytown who makes sculptures, collages and mobiles; Yoshimi Arai of Croton-on-Hudson who uses Japanese mulberry paper to create jewelry, trays, boxes, candleholders and more; Gail Gazes of Briarcliff who will be designing cards on site; Bonnie Talluto of Ossining who specializes in bird photography and Glenda Zuckerman of Ossining who draws with colored pencils.
Art and food will be accompanied by live music by Miriam and Mike Risko, owners of the Mike Risko Music School in Ossining. The Riskos have performed at every First Thursday since the event's inception in May.
"It's something to do on a Thursday night. For people who are normally home at 6 p.m., it gives them an opportunity to shop at the local businesses which are open extended hours until 8 p.m. It's been a positive for all the businesses," Valentine said.
