Greenwich High Housemaster Resigns

GREENWICH, Conn. – Joseph Russo, the housemaster of the Sheldon House at Greenwich High School, announced his resignation Friday to take a position with the Norwalk Public Schools.

Russo becomes assistant director of special education personnel services in Norwalk, effective immediately. He was with the Greenwich Public Schools for 13 years, the last four as master of Sheldon House.

“Joe is an excellent administrator who has served Greenwich High School diligently and effectively for many years,” said Greenwich High Headmaster Chris Winters. “His integrity, respect for others, keen understanding of educational reform and passion will be missed at GHS.”

As housemaster, Russo was in charge of monitoring student progress, supervising house activities and handling discipline for students assigned to the Sheldon House, one of five houses within the school. Russo organized Stand Against Racism activities and worked closely with the English and Reading departments. Prior to coming to Greenwich, Russo was principal of Henry Viscardi High School in Albertson, N.Y., for 11 years.

He began his career in education in 1975 as a Social Studies and English teacher at The Riverside School in New York City. From 1979 to 1983 he was a middle school  English teacher for the New York City Board of Education. In 1983, he became the clinic coordinator for the Child Study Center at Teachers College, Columbia University, supervising graduate students completing clinical course requirements. He also supervised student teaching at Hunter College (1985-1987) and at Teachers College (1986-1987).

Russo received a B.A. in English from Iona College in New Rochelle in 1972 and a master’s in special education and reading from Teachers College, Columbia University, in 1984.
