Parking Spaces Available at Library for Commuters

BEDFORD, N.Y.— The Bedford Hills Free Library may be free to take out books, but the parking lot isn't so free anymore.

There is a waiting list for many of the parking lots around the Bedford Hills train station, but not at the library. It may not be the first spot you think about when looking for parking spaces, but library has just began renting out its lot, which is located only a few steps from the station.

“This is actually the most convenient lot,” director of the Bedford Hills Free Library Rhoda M. Gushue said. “It’s just about crossing a street or two and you're there.”

The staff decided to rent out the spaces in their lot in an effort to raise money for the library, which is facing a 10 percent funding cut by the town.

“We needed to look into something we had that could be an asset,” Gushue said. The parking lot was just that. The library will save a few parking spaces for themselves, but will rent out the remaining 15 to both residents and non-residents. The price is $1,250 for the year which starts July 1 and ends June 30, 2012. The money will go towards operations at the library.

“We’re working hard to keep our expenses paid,” she said. Bedford Hills Free Library plans on renting these spaces out again next year as well.

“We’re trying to make this income continual year after year,” Gushue said “Especially in this economy when were all struggling.”

The parking lot is located on Griffen Avenue in Lot 6. Anyone who is interested should contact the library at 914-666-6472.
