GREENWICH, CONN. -- The Bruce Museum will offer a range of events in August.
Every Friday at 12:30 p.m., it will have a museum exhibition tour. The docent-led tour lasts approximately an hour and are free with museum admission. No reservations are necessary.
On Thursday, from 1-2:30 p.m., there will be "Lifetime of Looking: Flags Across America!" This program was created for senior citizens with memory loss and their caregivers. It will explore the museum’s natural history exhibition with museum educators to provide meaningful cultural experiences and personal enrichment. A voluntary craft project and refreshments are included. The program is free, but advance reservations are required. For information and reservations, call 203-413-6740 or 203-413-6741. On Aug. 4, the "First Sunday Bird Walk at Greenwich Point Park" will take place from 9-11 a.m.. A beach pass is required for park entry. Meet near the concession stand. Bring binoculars. Also on Aug. 4, from 1:30-4 p.m., the "First Sunday Science at the Seaside Center: Birds of Surf and Shore" will be held. Conducted at the Seaside Center in Greenwich Point Park, a beach pass is required for park entry. Learn about the importance of Greenwich Point to nesting and migrating birds and its designation as an important bird area by the National Audubon Society. Participants will have opportunities to observe museum specimens and watch native birds near the Seaside Center, including purple martins from the successful nesting project. Be sure to see the live bird show at 3 p.m., sponsored by the Friends of Greenwich Point. Presented by Greenwich Audubon, Friends of Greenwich Point and Bruce Museum. This program is especially designed for children ages 3-5 and their adult caregivers, who will explore the museum’s galleries through hands-on experiences, crafts, stories and more. Children will explore the exhibition "Flags Across America: The Photographs of Robert Carley" and then create their own American flags. Members $5, non-members $7 per child, per class. A new exhibition will open Aug. 31 and continue through Dec. 1 called "Telling American History: Realism from the Print Collection of Dr. Dorrance T. Kelly." This exhibition features more than 40 prints from Kelly's collection, covering 1905-67. Artists such as George Bellows, Thomas Hart Benton, Edward Hopper, Martin Lewis, Reginald Marsh, Grant Wood and John Sloan captured images of modern society as it quickly changed around them. Although these artists fall into various artistic schools and styles, including the Ashcan school and American Scene, they all approached their subject matter through the lens of realism.
The Bruce Museum, One Museum Drive, is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 1-5 p.m. Sundays. Admission is $7 for adults, $6 for students up to 22 years, $6 for seniors and free for members and children under 5 years. Individual admission is free Tuesdays.
