Greenwich Town Party Adds Free Events To Lineup

GREENWICH, Conn. – More people than ever will get to enjoy the annual Greenwich Town Party this year after the Board of Selectmen unanimously approved a "satellite" party location that will be free of charge to the public at a meeting Thursday.

The third annual Greenwich Town Party will feature a new, free "satellite" location for the public on Greenwich Avenue.

The third annual Town Party, scheduled for May 25, will still be based around the $40-per-ticket all-day festival at Roger Sherman Baldwin Park culminating in an A-list musical act. The new satellite location, meanwhile, will feature local bands, food trucks and activities for children and families with no entrance fee.

The satellite location will be the parking lot of the Board of Education building from noon to 6 p.m., just up the street from the Town Party's main location.

"As I previously presented in February, the Greenwich Town Party would like to extend from the park to Greenwich Avenue," event planner Scot Weicker said to the board. "The goal of which would be to have a true town party for individuals and families and draw business to our local businesses."

Annually a sellout event featuring big musical acts such as Paul Simon in 2012 and Buddy Guy in 2011, the town sought out a plan that would open the day's festivities to more Greenwich residents – and to encourage the public to patronize Greenwich businesses.

Event planners originally sought to use the entirety of Greenwich Avenue to make a "walking mall" for the public but have since scaled back that plan.

"I think the Greenwich Town Party has done a remarkable job insofar as individuals and families are concerned," Weicker said. "But we'd like to draw a greater focus to our local businesses in Greenwich."

Some free and subsidized tickets to the main stage area were made available at the previous events via donations. Party organizers expect to continue to that tradition this year.

This year's headlining act will be revealed March 21, Weicker also said. Ticket information and prices will also likely become available that same day.
