The theme of this summer's program is "Dig Into Reading," and will feature books that will "take you into the garden, underground, and on a journey through the world of science and art."
According to the library, The Summer Reading Program is part of Greenwich Library's commitment to promote the love of reading and encourage children and their families to keep reading over the summer break.
The Byram Shubert Library begins the three days of festivities with its kickoff event on Thursday at 5 p.m. Friends and educators from Animal Embassy will share unusual animals that dig into the earth during an interactive live animal program.
On Friday, the Cos Cob Library will host its kickoff event at 3:45 p.m with a performance by Airborne Jugglers.
The main branch of the Greenwich library will wrap up the kickoff events on Saturday at 1:45 p.m. with Casey Carle's BubbleMania, a fun and scientific look at bubbles. Refreshments and raffle prizes will follow the performance.
"Studies have shown that children who continue to read during the summer months perform significantly better than those who do not," Children's Librarian Alice Sherwood said in the statement. "Children who are already reading increase their reading fluency and comprehension; those who are just starting to read do not lose the early achievements they have made during the school year."
All children who are reading independently are welcome to join the Summer Reading Program, while babies, toddlers and pre-school children may participate in the Read-to-Me Club.
