Greenwich International Film Festival Starts Today

GREENWICH, Conn. -- The inaugural Greenwich International Film Festival (GIFF), two years in the making, begins today with a host of screenings and panel discussions.

The Festival, which goes until Sunday, is all aobut philanthrophy and harnessing the power of film to serve the greater good. It features 31 films as well as a host of free panel discussions. 

As previously reported, Colin Hanks’ documentary "All Things Must Pass," about the rise and fall of Tower Records, will screen tomorrow, with a party to follow.

On Saturday, longtime UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors Harry Belafonte and Mia Farrow will be named as the inaugural Changemaker Honorees at a Gala emceed by Kathie Lee Gifford. 

Other highlights:

  • "Wildlike" will be showing today at 1 p.m. and Saturday, at 8 p.m. at Bow Tie Criterion Cinemas and features a Q & A session with Director Frank Hall Green and Producer Joseph Stephans. The movie, which has already garnered multiple awards, was filmed on 35mm over 3,000 miles of Alaska.
  • Meet Director (and former Wilton resident), Paul Dalio and Cinematographer/Producer, Kristina Nikolova at Ralph Lauren (265 Greenwich Avenue) from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with an 8:30 p.m. showing of their movie, "Touched With Fire" at Bow Tie Cinemas (see previous Daily Voice story here.)
  • Dialo is just one of many Fairfield County residents who are involved in GIFF films. Go here for information on Charles Hood's film, "Night Owls" being screened at Bow Tie Cinemas 2:30 p.m. Friday and at 6 p.m. on Saturday where he will participate in a Q & A.
  • Greenwich resident (and college student) Luke Lorentzen won't be at the showing of his documentary

  • Check out "I Smile Back," Saturday at 8:30 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m., a film produced by Greenwich resident David Levien (look for story tomorrow). This narrative feature is a psychological drama starring Sarah Silverman that examines one woman's harrowing descent into chaos, and her attempts to put her life back together. 

  • Like sports? "Sports Guys on Sports Movies," will be discussed Thursday at 6 p.m. where a panel of athletes and ESPN on-air talent will bring their insights – and passions – to this lively topic.

  • "The Changing Face of Television," will be discussed Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Cole Auditorium at Greenwich Library. On the panel: Colin Hanks (“Fargo”), Thomas Kelly (Producer, “Copper,” “Blue Bloods”), Alysia Reiner (“Orange is the New Black”), Terence Winter (Creator, “Boardwalk Empire"), and Charlie Collier (President and GM of AMC and SundanceTV). 

  • Yogasmoga, at 68 Greenwich Avenue, is offering VIP yoga classes Saturday at 9 a.m., 4:30 p.m., and Sunday at 9 a.m. RSVP to whitney@greenwichfilm.org or call (203) 340-2735.
  • P. Riot, i.e. political activists, Nadezhda (Nadya) Tolokonnikova and Maria (Masha) Alekhina, will be on hand Sunday at 1:30 p.m.to show their newest video and engage in a post-screening discussion at Bow Tie Cinemas.
