Greenwich Hospital will host two free informational sessions for people interested in learning more about weight loss surgery.

The Jan. 14 session will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Hyde Conference Room. The session on Jan. 27 begins at 4:45 p.m. at the Cos Cob Conference room. Greenwich Hospital is at 5 Perryridge Road.

People who are 60 to 100 pounds overweight and concerned about developing obesity-related conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and gastric reflux may be a candidate for weight-loss surgery.

Known as bariatric surgery, there are three standard options to consider:  a gastric bypass (which bypasses the larger portion of the stomach and reroutes food to the intestines), adjustable gastric banding (which restricts food intake by adjusting the size of the stomach), and a sleeve gastrectomy (in which a good portion of the stomach is surgically removed).  Each procedure carries risks but also offers those who have struggled with morbid obesity the opportunity to make behavior and lifestyle changes while losing a significant amount of weight.

Surgeons will discuss what constitutes an eligible bariatric candidate, the pros and cons of each procedure, the long-term health benefits, and the kind of post-operative counseling and support a patient can expect from the Greenwich Hospital bariatric program.

Registration is required by calling 203-863-3646. Find out more about the Bariatric Surgery program online at greenwichhospital.org.
