Get Frank With National Hot Dog Day, Greenwich

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- It's time to celebrate one of America's favorite foods -- the hot dog.

National Hot Dog Day is celebrated every July 23. No picnic or baseball match can ever be complete without a hot dog.

According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, around 20 billion hot dogs are consumed per year in the United States. Hot dogs, which also are known as frankfurters, franks, wieners, dogs and red hots, have been around since the late 1800s.

It is obvious people are in love with this kind of food. Although Americans eat hot dogs on a regular basis and celebrate National Hot Dog Day every year, there is no clear evidence about the origin of this day.

Still, each year people across the country observe National Hot Dog Day and spend the day celebrating their love of the food. People often use hot dogs for cookouts and outdoor parties with their friends and consume as many hot dogs as they can.
