Pound Ridge Pride Day Lives Up to its Name

More than 200 residents came out Sunday to help celebrate the first Pound Ridge Pride Day, which was held in the town’s business district.

The event was conceived and sponsored by the Pound Ridge Partnership, a nonprofit organization that was organized about a year ago with the mission to beautify and revitalize the business district along Westchester Avenue.

“This was our first event as a group and it couldn’t have gone better,” said Ali Boak, a Pound Ridge Partnership board member. “It was great – the whole community came together. There were community organizations and government representatives, along with businesses that stayed open on Sunday to partake.”

The primary goal of the event was to beautify the business district. Five groups were formed, including families and kids, as well as the Boy and Girl Scouts, who tended to five different sites. Planting, weeding, garbage pickup and painting were done.

“People really enjoyed that part of it,” Boak said. “They got into it.”

After the sprucing up, a barbecue was held on Westchester Avenue and hamburgers and hotdogs were served, while live music played on the sidewalk.

“We had enough food for about 200 meals and it was just about all gone by the end,” Boak said.

Other fun included a pie eating contest, which matched about 20 kids with Pound Ridge Police Chief David Ryan and town Recreation Director David Goldberg.

“That part was pretty hilarious,” Boak said.

Local landscape company owners David and Lois Anderson were honored with the first beautification award.

“They work with the Pound Ridge Business Association and donate a lot of time [and materials] to do planting and watering around town, as well as the Christmas decorations,” said Boak. “In the future, the award will be named after them: the David and Lois Anderson Beautification Award.”

Boak said that Pound Ridge Pride Day will become an annual event.
