Bear Claws Its Way Through Screen, Enters Weston Home In Search Of Food

WESTON, Conn. — A black bear that tore a screen and then pried open a window to get into a Weston home over the weekend was likely in search of food, according to the Weston Forum.

Bear sightings are on the rise across Connecticut, and one broke into a home in rural Weston, the town's animal control officer reported.

A homeowner on Treadwell Lane had 10 outdoor bird feeders, some of which were filled with suet to attract woodpeckers, the Weston Forum said.

The smell of the suet inside the home likely lured the bear indoors, Weston Animal Control Officer Mark Harper told the Forum.

The bear was in and out quickly, doing little damage and was not spotted, the Forum said, but left behind telltale fur and pawprints.

Suet is like candy to bears, Harper told the Weston Forum.

To deter bears, residents should take down bird feeders, place garbage cans inside a garage or shed, and clean and store grills. Don't feed bears or approach them, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said.

With their population on the rise across Connecticut, more and more bear are being spotted in the state, DEEP said.

Residents are asked to report sightings to DEEP at 860-424-3011 or by clicking here.
