North Salem School Recess: What to Do With the Kids

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – With North Salem schools closed this week, here are some ideas for things to do with the kids in and around the North Salem area during the recess week:

Ice Skating

Brewster Ice Arena, Brewster

The ice arena is open for public sessions every weekday. Prices are $7 for anyone 12 and older, $5 for anyone 11 or younger. Skate rentals are $3. The hours are as follows:

Monday - Friday: 10 a.m. - noon, 12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Monday only: 3 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Tuesday - Friday: 3 p.m. - 5 p.m.

Friday only: 8:15 p.m. - 10:15 p.m.

Skiing

Thunder Ridge Ski Area, Patterson

Despite the mild weather, Thunder Ridge will be open every day thanks to its own snow-making equipment. The trails open at 9 a.m. and stay open until evening. Half-day lessons and some evening lessons are offered. Equipment rentals are available. Prices are reasonable and various combination tickets are sold, so call for information and/or to make lesson reservations. The number is 845-878-4100.

Circus

Westchester County Center, White Plains

Monday - The Royal Hanneford Circus is back in town with three performances at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Tigers, acrobats, the human cannonball, mother and baby elephants are just part of the attractions. Prices range from $22.50 to $28.50. Tickets are available at the County Center Box Office, (no service fee) or through Ticketmaster (service fee applies). Winterbowl

Grand Prix N.Y., Mt. Kisco

Thursday 6 p.m. - 10 p.m.  This new state-of-the art bowling center and lounge will benefit the Music Therapy Institute of Westchester by sponsoring a special night of bowling, racing live music, and more. The price for children 16 and under is $50, for adults it is $60. Proceeds go toward a scholarship for the MTI, which serves more than 2,000 children and adults in Westchester through music therapy.

Winter Wolves

Wolf Conservation Center, South Salem

Wednesday 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.   Visit Atka, Alawa and Zephyr, the WCC’s Ambassador wolves, and learn about wolf families and their winter lifestyle. Wear your warm winter togs. Hot beverages served later in the wood stove heated classroom. Adults are $15, children under 12, $12. Pre-registration is required. Call 914-763-2373 or visit info@nywolf.org

Thursday 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.   Wolf Tails for Kids will focus on the relationship between wolves and humans in the past. Visit Atka, Alawa and Zephyr afterwards. Dress for cold weather and don’t forget your camera.

Saturday 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.   Pack Chat for Kids, ages 4 to 8 get to see an introduction to wolves for families with young children. Visit the Ambassador wolves and the endangered red and Mexican gray wolves. Don’t forget your camera and dress for cold weather.

Saturday 2 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.   Yellowstone Howl is a special talk about the wolves of Yellowstone National Park. Guests will also visit the local pack: Atka, Alawa and Zephyr. Bring your camera and dress warmly.
