GWB suicide jumper from East Rutherford was stopped by Port Authority police at same spot last month

CVP EXCLUSIVE: A 38-year-old East Rutherford man who jumped to his death from the lower level of the George Washington Bridge yesterday — moments before another man committed suicide from the upper level — had been stopped from doing so by Port Authority police last month at the exact same spot, CLIFFVIEW PILOT has learned.

The man was threatening to jump when two PAPD officers snatched him off the outer railing the night of Feb. 16.

An hour or so earlier, East Rutherford police notified the PAPD that the distraught Asian man had been reported missing and was believed headed there, as CLIFFVIEW PILOT reported the following morning. A comprehensive initial canvass didn’t turn up anything. Soon after, however, another driver summoned police after seeing the man get out of his 2011 Toyota Venza on the lower level.

Officer Jesse Turano, who has a history of saves, responded with Officer Brendan Mulderigg. They found him “standing on the river side of the railing in an agitated state,” the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo said at the time.

Turano reached over and grabbed the 175-pound man and the two struggled as Mulderrig held onto his partner as an anchor.

Fort Lee Ambulance took him to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center after the officers got him to safety.

Yesterday, the troubled man returned to the spot in the Sienna around 4:10 p.m., got out and jumped, multiple law enforcement sources told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Less than 10 minutes later, a 21-year-old man from Ocean View (Cape May County) pedaled a bicycle onto bridge’s upper level, stopped and went over the railing, authorities said.

The NYPD Harbor Unit recovered one body and the city Fire Department the other. Both were brought to the the 125th Street boat basin in Manhattan.

PAPD ESU trucks 2 and 7 responded to the bridge.
