GREENWICH, Conn. -- The Bruce Museum in Greenwich will be hosting a rare exhibit of artwork assembled from three private Greenwich collections, which will be on view beginning Sunday, July 6.
The exhibit will continue through Sunday, Aug. 31.
The first of the collections is comprised of rare Italian Renaissance and Baroque drawings. The second collection, owned by Helen-Mae and Seymour Askin, has a focus on American art with a focus in Andrew Wyeth's art. The third collection, most of which has been donated or promised to the Bruce Museum by Fred and Jane Brooks, offers a wide-array of ancient Chinese ceramics, primarily from the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD).
"Greenwich is fortunate to be one of the most active centers for the private collecting of art in the country, indeed in the world," the Bruce Museum said in a statement. "This show serves to illustrate the diversity and beauty of three local collections. Although only a selection of a portion of their holdings, the works that will be on view speak to the remarkable level of quality achieved and the connoisseurship their owners brought to bear on the assembly of their collections."
Peter C. Sutton, executive director of the Bruce Museum, is excited about the exhibit.
“It seems especially fitting to have these Chinese antiquities on view when we are featuring the exhibition of Chinese and American contemporary artists' works, Tales of Two Cities: New York & Beijing,” says Sutton. “As heterodox as the three collections are, they reflect the passion and discernment of their owners. We are grateful to them for permitting the public to share in the enjoyment of their art for a brief period this summer.”
The museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. It is closed Mondays and major holidays. Admission is $7 for adults, $6 for students up to 22 years, $6 for seniors and free for members and children less than 5 years. Individual admission is free on Tuesday.
