Joey Edwards, a junior at North Hunterdon High School in Clinton, was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in February, according to a GoFundMe launched by his aunt, Amy DiPaolo, and several other loved ones on his behalf.

Joey has been undergoing months of chemotherapy following the discovery of the tumor in his knee and is also scheduled to have surgery — but his battle with cancer doesn’t end there, organizers say.

“Unfortunately, the cancer is elsewhere in his body, so the treatments will continue after surgery,” reads the campaign.

Described as a “strong young man” full of resiliency, Joey, a member of the National Honor Society, is determined to win his battle with Osteosarcoma with community supporters backing him every step of the way. In fact, over $53,000 had been raised on the campaign after it was created less than a week ago — but according to organizers, it had surpassed its initial donation goal in under 24 hours.

The funds will go toward Joey’s at-home care and allow him to spend time with his loving family.

The campaign had already garnered attention on social media as well:

“One of our former Junior Lions Lacrosse players and current Junior at North, Joey Edwards, has been going through treatments for Osteosarcoma, an aggressive form of bone cancer,” the team writes. “Please consider donating….no amount is too small.”

“Joey continues to fight like the strong young man he is,” reads the campaign. “The support he receives from you is an immeasurable contribution towards his resiliency. Please continue to pray for him.”
