“How to Jump Start Your College Admissions Essays,” led by Michele Turk, founder of A Bloc of Writers, will offer advice on how to:

  • Tackle the Common Application essay prompts and various supplemental essays
  • Select appropriate topics and themes
  • Organize and focus the essays
  • Find your voice and particular style
  • Avoid common essay mistakes

Both students and their parents are welcome to attend the lecture. It can be helpful for parents to learn how much work their child has cut out for them when it comes to college admissions essays, says Turk, who has worked as a writer, editor and writing instructor for two decades.

“There is a huge difference between writing a high school English paper and writing a college application essay,” said Turk. “Many students we work with have never written this type of narrative essay, so it’s not surprising to us that even top students struggle with the task, but many parents don’t realize this until late in the application process.”

Anyone who has been on a college tour recently knows that admissions officers echo the same advice: writing a thoughtful, well-crafted college application essay is essential to gaining admittance to a selective college or university. Working with a qualified college application essay tutor can help demystify and simplify this task, says Turk.

A Bloc of Writers has also hired a college admissions consultant who will be available to clients on an hourly basis.

Turk has worked as a writer and editor for two decades. Her articles have appeared in Business Week, USA Weekend, Parents and Parenting magazines, among others. She has worked as an adjunct professor of journalism at Quinnipiac University and is the author of “Blood, Sweat and Tears: An Oral History of the American Red Cross.”

The Greenwich Water Club is located at 49 River Road, Cos Cob.
