Teen Summit In Stamford Shines Light On Girls, Entrepreneurship, Leadership

STAMFORD, Conn. — Parents, teens and policy leaders will converge in Stamford on Sept. 10 to shine a light on the importance of boosting girls’ business, leadership and entrepreneurship skills.

Believed to be the first of its kind in Connecticut, the Girls Entrepreneurship Summit: Launch Our Daughters Lunch will feature three innovative businesswomen and teens who hope to follow in their footsteps.

Why focus on girls?

Women are underrepresented in the both leadership and the crucial STEM field (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Only 6 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs are women and about 36 percent of entrepreneurs are women, according to the summit’s organizers.

In addition, girls tend to have a high fear of failure. Seven out of 10 avoid trying new things due to this fear, organizers report.

Attendees for the day will include: Hadley Pollet, CEO of a multimillion-dollar design firm; Lynda Applegate, professor of entrepreneurship at Harvard Business School; and Jennifer Openshaw, CEO of Girls with Impact.

The lunch will be held from 12:30 to 2 p.m., Sept. 10, in the GenRe Auditorium of the University of Connecticut’s Stamford campus.
