Salon Says Greenwich Women Don't Skimp On Hair

GREENWICH, Conn. – In a slow economy in which some families are cutting back on big-ticket items, the so-called “ladies who lunch” set in Greenwich find that hair and beauty are indispensable.

“Our customers are the type of people who would rather have last year’s car and have their hair done perfect,” says John Castagnetti of Christopher Noland Salon. “They want to look beautiful, and we don’t want them leaving until their hair is perfect, and they have exactly what they want and had a stylist that actually listens to them.”

The salon's clients will not cut back on health and beauty, Castagnetti says. “Every mom, every PTA lady, every business woman is out there selling herself every day and she wants to look the part,” he said. “If you look your best, people want to be around you. They want to be like you. They admire you.”

Noland formally trained in New York City before making his way to Riverside, where he developed a loyal following over 16 years. Two years ago, he opened his own salon on Greenwich Avenue, at the site of another salon nearing the end of its life cycle.

The main focus of Christopher Noland Salon is offering a comfortable environment with professionally licensed stylists who understand and listen to the clientele. “You can get your hair done anywhere, but here you have someone who cares about you," said Castagnetti, Noland's business partner. "We have clients who can’t leave the house – someone had surgery and used to get a manicure every week here. I say, ‘We have a bucket, and we will travel.’”

The business is 2 years old, and salon competition is stiff – especially with a new blow out bar that recently opened on the avenue. Still, Christopher Noland Salon is thriving.

“We were very fortunate. Because it was a salon for so long, even though there’s a new name on the door people knew it was there,” said Castagnetti, adding that word-of-mouth is the salon’s biggest form of advertising. “Chris also brought 98 percent of his customers over with him, so we were very fortunate.”

The salon was voted “Reader’s Choice” for Best Salon Escape in Serendipity magazine’s Ultimate Guide for 2012. Earlier this year, Christopher Noland introduced his Professional Series – shampoo, conditioner, and hair polish – to re-create the salon experience at home.

Christopher Noland Salon offers a full range of services — coloring, cutting and styling as well as facials, makeup, health-conscious manicures, pedicures, waxing and massage. It is located at 124 Greenwich Ave. Call 203-622-4247 for more information.
