Installed by the Norwalk Parking Authority last month, the kiosks allow visitors to gather addresses, phone numbers and directions to dozens of places to eat, shop or find entertainment in the city.

The kiosks, which together cost about $12,000, are linked to large flat screen monitors positioned high on a wall nearby that shows the same information as on the kiosk, only bigger and more visible. In addition to the other information, the kiosks also list some of the city’s employers and places to live.

The authority will study how people use the kiosks over the next several months and may add more, according to Jessica Colon, a customer service representative with the authority. “We’ll see how it goes.”

Currently, businesses that appear on the kiosks do not pay for the advertising, but the authority will consider possibly charging for certain ads in the future. The kiosks also can print out coupons for discounts at various businesses or restaurants.

The 769-space Maritime Garage sits on Water Street across from the Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, between Marshall and Ann streets. Most of the information in the system lists shops, restaurants and attractions in South Norwalk, but businesses in other parts of the city also are highlighted.

“The reactions we’ve been getting from people have been good,” said Colon. “These kiosks have been very helpful.”
