The Pooch Hotel recently opened in Norwalk on East Avenue next to the East Norwalk train station. Pooch Hotel is owned by Petco, and the Norwalk location is the first in Connecticut. The business had a soft opening in March and celebrated its grand opening this past weekend with tours and pet photo booths.

The three-story building has room for about 130 dogs. Dogs who visit Pooch Hotel can enjoy daycare, longer-term boarding, training and grooming. There are no crates, and each dog gets a private suite with glass doors, bedding and natural lighting. Some rooms even come with televisions for dogs to watch.

"Some dog owners, when they leave the house, will leave the TV on because the noise is a comfort for their dogs. We provide that service here," said Nick Colbert, a supervisor at the hotel.

For dog owners who are nervous about leaving their pets, the hotel offers webcam services. Owners can check in on their dogs through email or their smartphone any time of day. The hotel is staffed 24 hours a day, so the dogs are never left alone. All the employees at the hotel are trained by Petco and are familiar with dog behavior, Colbert said.

There is a small retail area where owners can pick up leashes and toys. The Spa services include baths, brushing, nail-clipping, toothbrushing and ear cleaning, as well as fitness programs and one-on-one individual play with a trainer.

There are three play rooms for dogs to get exercise and interact with other dogs. The dogs are temperament-tested to make sure that they are placed with dogs of similar dispositions. Owners can sign up for training classes or private training for all dogs, from simple puppy training to older dogs.

Pooch Hotel has relationships with local veterinarians in case of an emergency. They also house some foster dogs from the Big Fluffy Dog Rescue and offer adoption services.
