A New Canaan speech therapist recently received a video from the mother of a student she helped 10 years ago. The student was giving a speech to a packed auditorium in his high school.

“He looked confident. It was amazing,” Allyson Mahoney told Daily Voice. “It’s small moments like that that make my job so rewarding."

Mahoney started Bram Consultants in 2004. It is a home-based practice — she is also a mom — that provides individualized evaluation and therapy programs for adults and children.

Clients range from age 2 to 18 and come from New Canaan, Stamford, Norwalk, Wilton, Greenwich, and Rye, N.Y. The practice expanded recently and hired speech and language pathologists.

“We now have a feeding specialist, so we can also offer in-home feeding and swallowing therapy for adults and children,” said Mahoney.

Mahoney started out as a speech and language pathologist in Greenwich schools. She later worked at others in Connecticut and New York. Her business grew out of getting requests from parents who were looking for speech therapy "above and beyond what their children were receiving at school or through (schools') birth-to-3 program,” said Mahoney.

"We have been growing steadily and have had the challenge of being able to schedule all of the students who were requesting after school speech therapy sessions. That is our busiest time of day.”

Clients seek the services for improving articulation skills, late talkers, fluency, social skills, executive functioning, vocabulary development, and language-based learning disabilities.

"I love my job, and I have always known that I wanted to be in a position to help children," said Mahoney.

She is an advocate for early intervention and giving young children "strong foundational speech and language skills so that they can develop literacy and social skills."
