James McArdle III, owner of McArdle's Florist & Garden Center at 48 Arch St., said Valentine's Day is one of the busiest of the year. Roses are always a big seller, he said.
Women expect to receive roses for the romantic holiday, and, most women tend to love roses, McArdle said.
"The red roses are classic, and they convey romance, and she likes that, generally speaking," he said.
When customers enter the business looking for flowers, especially men, uncertain about what to buy, McArdle said they try to offer a wide variety of choices of flowers to buy.
"We try to encourage men to buy different shades of pink and other flowers," he said as he pointed to a wall of different flowers such as calla lilies.
"They are stressed," he said of the customers, with a laugh. Much of that stress is due to procrastination or indecision, he said.
The flower industry is slightly different -- it can bail out men who have left buying their flowers to the last minute, McArdle said.
"If you are stuck in the city or away on business, we come to the rescue because we can deliver door to door. No other industry really does that as far as gifts," he said, adding with a laugh. "We can help out that misguided soul."
"We deliver romance, just like the sign outside," McArdle said, referring to sign by the building's front.
Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Easter, Christmas and Thanksgiving are among the biggest single days of the year for business, he said.
